The European court of human rights has ruled the controversial stop and search powers exercised by British police as illegal.
The court ruled on Tuesday the powers introduced by the government under the Terrorism Act 2000 to stop people without grounds for suspicion violated article eight of the European convention on human rights – the right to privacy.
The ruling relates to the case of two people stopped near an arms fair in London in 2003.
Today the European court ruled Kevin Gillan, 32, and 38-year-old Pennie Quinton’s right to respect for a private and a family life had been violated.
