House Energy and Commerce Communications Subcommittee Chairman Rick Boucher (Dem. Va.) recently received stakeholder comments on a draft consumer privacy bill, a “notice and choice” throwback covering the online and offline collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. Representative Boucher summarized the feedback that he received in this way: most business groups believe the legislation is “too strict” while privacy advocates object to its insufficient protection of consumer interests. For Boucher, such mutual dissatisfaction seemed promising. For him, it signaled the “centrist” nature of the proposal.
Although the Boucher privacy may offer a little something for privacy advocates and business interests, it may end up giving us all very little.
