High court struggles with funeral protest case (update 1)

Mark Sherman of The Associated Press provides early coverage from today’s Supreme Court hearing pitting free speech and freedom of religion claims of the Westboro Baptist Church against claims of right to privacy by the grieving family of a slain Marine in the Snyder v. Phelps case:

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the question is whether the First Amendment must tolerate “exploiting this bereaved family.”
