A High Court challenge on the constitutional validity of laws preventing the public knowing the identity of sex offenders has begun in Canberra today.
Melbourne broadcaster Derryn Hinch is fighting five contempt of court charges and is questioning the validity of a section of the 2005 Victorian Sex Offenders Monitoring Act.
His counsel has told the court the privacy of sex offenders can never outweigh the principle of open justice, likening it to weighing a mouse against an elephant.
