Worldwide charity Amnesty International has called for Indonesia to ban plans to introduce mandatory pregnancy and virginity tests on high school girls in the country.
This week, it was reported that the head of a secondary school in Magetan, East Java, had forced pupils to undergo the tests before they received a place to study at the institution.
“These tests are not only intrusive and degrading but plainly discriminatory, as nowhere are men or boys subjected to any equivalent form of ‘moral’ testing”, said Isabelle Arradon, Amnesty International’s Indonesia researcher.
