Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) chairman Ivan Uy expressed optimism that legislators will be able to pass House Bill 3828 or the Philippine Data Privacy Act before Congress adjourns for the Christmas recess.
“The data privacy and security bill is still pending in Congress. We are hoping the lower house can submit it by end of the year, before they go on holiday recess, and get it passed by fits quarter of next year,” Uy said during his brief talk with members of the media during the HP-Intel Synergy event held in Palawan over the weekend.

The Data Privacy Act criminalizes the unauthorized processing of personal data and imposes a fine of P1 million to P3 million with imprisonment between six to 12 years for anyone found guilty of the crime.
Likewise, those found guilty of processing personal information for unauthorized purposes will also be imprisoned for six years and a day up to eight years and will be slapped with P500,000 to P1 million fine.
