UK: Fingerprints for pupils under fire

Schools fingerprinting pupils have come under fire as the EU demands they justify the controversial practice.
A handful of Calderdale schools, including Todmorden High and Brighouse High, use the biometric technology, where scans of children’s thumbs are stored and linked to a canteen or library accounts.

But the European Commission has hit out at the method over “significant concerns” it breaches Brussels data-protection legislation, which overrides UK law.

Now members of privacy campaign group NO2ID are calling on head teachers to scrap the practice.
