U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy introduced legislation that seeks to enhance protections for consumers’ personal information, citing recent data breaches at Sony Corp. and Lockheed Martin Corp.
The bill would establish a national standard for companies to notify customers when their personal data has been exposed, according to a news release today from Leahy, a Vermont Democrat who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. The measure also proposes criminal penalties for those who conceal data breaches that cause “economic damage” to consumers.
