MD: School system seeking Social Security numbers

I’ve repeatedly criticized federal and state student tracking systems that are based on Social Security numbers. As I continue to shout into the wind, Alisha George reports:

Heather McKenzie was surprised when the Social Security numbers of her three elementary school children were being requested by Carroll County Public Schools this year.

As she continued to think about the request, her surprise turned to annoyance, even though she exercised her right to decline sharing that information.

“The Maryland State Department of Education is expecting a parent to give the information that can impact every aspect of a child’s life without fully disclosing the intended use or their rights to privacy and security of information,” said McKenzie, of Union Bridge.
