Jordan Press reports:
OTTAWA – The federal government says it plans to protect Canadian interests in ongoing negotiations with the U.S. on a new cross-border deal, but won’t say what kind of information it is willing to exchange for better trade access.
A spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said the government has consulted the privacy commissioner during negotiations. The security and trade agreement includes provisions for Canada to share security-related information, he said.
Chris Day wouldn’t say what type of information could be shared with American officials. “The full text of the action plan will be made public in the near future, once finalized. It will make clear what types of information our governments will exchange,” he said in an email.
Right. Perish the thought this should get out publicly to give Canadian privacy advocates a chance to respond and draw public attention to concerns.
