NC: New Gastonia recycle carts will have RFID chips removed

Michael Barrett reports that a change in council composition has led to a change in plans and new recycling carts will not enable snooping on residents:

… Council members on Tuesday voted 4-3 to immediately stop the delivery of any new recycle carts equipped with radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips. Having the devices on each cart would allow the city to monitor when a recycle cart was emptied by a truck at the curb. City officials planned to use that information, in part, to guide future education efforts in communities that weren’t recycling.
