Defendant in Rutgers gay snooping case rejects no-jail plea deal

Posted on December 9, 2011 by pogowasright.org

Associated Press reports:

Prosecutors offered the former Rutgers student accused of using a webcam to spy on his roommate’s intimate encounter with another man a plea deal that would have kept him out of prison and sought to prevent his deportation.

But on Friday, Dharun Ravi’s lawyer told a judge that he would not take the deal. “Simple answer, simple principle,” the lawyer, Steven Altman, said after the court hearing. “He’s innocent. He’s not guilty. That’s why he rejected the plea.”

So he’s going to roll the dice and hope a jury acquits him? That’s quite a gamble. I think I would have advised him to take the plea deal. I wonder whether the young man has fully realized how tired people are of bullying and harassment and may use him as an opportunity to send a strong message. In fact, I’m not sure why the prosecutor keeps offering him increasingly lenient deals. Do they doubt their ability to make their case?
