Belarus will curb access to a range of foreign and domestic websites deemed “extremist” in what appears to be a move by authorities to further restrict the opposition’s activities.
The new law, which was expected to come into force on 6 January, will also require local Internet vendors to register in the ex-Soviet republic and imposes fines on companies selling goods in Belarus through foreign websites. Under the new regulations, cybercafes are required to monitor their customers’ Internet use and record and store personal information about those users and the sites they visit.
And individuals who let others use their computers can be fined if the users visit foreign or banned sites.
