The New Jersey Supreme Court is considering whether young drivers need to display red decals on their license plates.
The justices on Tuesday heard arguments over whether “Kyleigh’s Law” violates privacy and leaves young motorists vulnerable to predators.

Personally, I always find it helpful to see “STUDENT DRIVER” blazoned all over the back of a car because – understandably – young/new drivers do have higher rates of problems on the road. But if you think it’s okay to tag their cars this way, how do you feel about a different colored tag for drivers over 75? After all, studies show they also pose a greater risk to other drivers.
Is there a privacy issue here, and if so, does “the greater good” of public safety trump any privacy concerns?
