Natalie Stechyson reports:
A teenage girl who says she was a victim of Facebook cyberbullying will have her case heard in Canada’s top court on Thursday where she’ll try to keep her name out of the public eye once and for all.
The Supreme Court of Canada will decide whether the girl from Nova Scotia, known only as A.B., can keep her name — as well as what was said about her online — under a publication ban, while she tries to sue the person or persons responsible for defamation.
A national media coalition is intervening in the case, which pits the constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of the press against the inherent vulnerability of young girls subject to online sexualized bullying and the risk of harm if they’re required to reveal their identity and republish comments, according to court documents.
