Sum Choi reports on how Macau’s Office for Personal Data Protection has imposed fines in some cases of data protection violations:
- Wynn Macau has been fined MOP 20,000 (U.S. $2502.28) for unauthorized transfers of hotel guests’ personal data to its parent company in the U.S. The details included customer identities, shopping, and entertainment records.
- Sands China has also been fined, but the amount was not disclosed pending possible appeal. The casino’s operator reportedly admitted last August that they transferred employee records of their former CEO to the US for a court case.
- A plastic surgery company that used one of their clients’ photos before and after surgery for business promotion without the patient’s consent was fined for MOP 12,000 (U.S. $1501.37).
- An official of an undisclosed government department was fined MOP 8,000 (U.S. $1000.91) for publicly posting the medical report of a fellow staff member.
