U.S. and California Officials Enter Battle Over Facebook Privacy Settlement

A couple of government wingmen have joined privacy groups in their legal dogfight with Facebook over the company’s use of teenagers’ likes and comments in advertising.

On Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission filed a brief with the appeals court hearing the three-year-old case. It was the first time the agency, the nation’s chief regulator on consumer privacy issues, has entered the dispute.

The F.T.C. said the judge who approved the settlement was wrong when he accepted Facebook’s argument that a federal privacy law governing children under age 13 preempted state protections for older children.
