The Ontario privacy commissioner initiated legal action against the Toronto police Thursday regarding police disclosure of suicide data to authorities in the United States, which prevented several Canadians from crossing the border.
Ann Cavoukian’s notice of application for judicial review asks the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to order the Toronto Police Service to cease “indiscriminately” disclosing attempted suicide information.
“Such disclosure makes this information routinely available to other Canadian law enforcement agencies and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officials,” reads the affidavit.
