A police report yesterday detailed how journalists’ telephone records were seized in order to track down the whistleblowers who revealed former Government chief whip Andrew Mitchell’s altercation with officers outside 10 Downing Street.

It’s not clear from the wording of the report what “seized” or “successfully applied for” really mean. Did Met Police seek and obtain a warrant or did the mobile provider just turn over the records because the police asked? This needs to be clarified. In any event, attempts to get information on journalists’ sources is always concerning.
