Schumer: 81,000 in Rochester-Finger Lakes region victim of identity theft

Posted on September 17, 2014 by pogowasright.org

Julie Sherwood reports:

Some 81,000 residents in the Rochester/Finger Lakes region were victims of identity theft in 2012, according to the most recent federal data. On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer released data regarding identity theft in announcing his push for a new Social Security Identity Theft Bill of Rights.

The bill would give seniors and those who are disabled “new protections to guard against social security number theft and new remedies to address the situation,” the senator stated in a release.

I don’t think the bill has been introduced yet, and from Sherwood’s description, it doesn’t sound like the bill will prohibit the collection and storage of SSN, which is something that needs to happen.
