The latest amendments to the law on the Internet, granting the Telecommunications Directorate (TİB) extensive powers over Internet use, including obtaining Internet traffic data from Internet service providers (ISPs) without a court order, is a violation of the right to privacy, say analysts.

One regulation in the amendments allows the TİB to obtain Internet traffic data from Internet service providers (ISPs) without a court order, and allows it to provide this data to the relevant authorities if a court order so demands.
Remarking that there is more than one violation in this regulation, Ünaldı said: “The judiciary makes its decisions according to the laws and then law-enforcement officers bring the decisions into action. With these amendments, the job of justice was given to an incompetent officer [the head of the TİB].”
The second new regulation decrees TİB can have a website shut down within four hours, on the grounds of ensuring national security or public order or of preventing a crime from being committed.
