Where is the line between a private company’s affairs and our interest in treating it as a semi-public utility? Are Facebook, Google and LinkedIn accountable to any higher standard than smaller companies here?
Last month, Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner said that a raft of “significant” recommendations had been issued to LinkedIn on ways it should improve its 1.2 million Irish users’ privacy. The recommendations, delivered on behalf of all European citizens, represent the culmination of a year-long investigation into the giant online networking firm, which now has over 75 million European users and 313 million worldwide users.
Unfortunately, the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) is not releasing any details of those “significant” recommendations. Nor is it indicating what problems it may have discovered in relation to how LinkedIn treats our personal information.
It says it can’t.
