The company behind Manchester’s annual festival, the Parklife Weekender, has been fined £70,000 after sending unsolicited marketing text messages in May, saying:
Some of the Parklife after parties have already sold out. If your going, make sure your home for breakfast! xxx www.afterlifemcr.com
(It’s a shame the ICO couldn’t impose an additional penalty for mis-spelling “you’re” as “your” not once, but twice, in the text message.)
The text was sent to 70,000 people who had bought tickets to the festival, and appeared on the recipients’ mobile phones to have been sent by “Mum.” The message distressed many recipients whose mothers were dead. Both the ICO and Parklife Manchester received complaints about the unsolicited messages.
