This week, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, is cosponsoring three bills aimed at strengthening individual privacy amid increasingly aggressive government efforts to collect data during the course of investigations into criminal and national security threats.
All three bills boost privacy: insisting government agencies obtain a search warrant for electronic surveillance; barring the government from demanding surveillance “back doors” for things like smart phones; protecting companies from government prosecution should they reveal information about the surveillance requests.
