Governor Brown vetoes drone privacy bill

Posted on September 10, 2015 by pogowasright.org

Yesterday, I posted an OpEd from the director of the Small UAV Coalition, opposing California SB 142 and urging Governor Brown to veto it.

And veto it he did. In his veto message, the Governor writes:

“This bill would enact trespass liability for anyone flying a drone below 350 feet above real property without the express permission of the property owner, whether or not anyone’s privacy was violated by the flight.
[…]
This bill, however, while well-intentioned, could expose the occasional hobbyist and the FAA-approved commercial user alike to burdensome litigation and new causes of action.”
AB 856, another privacy bill that addresses invasion of privacy that passed the legislature, has been sitting on the Governor’s desk since September 3.
