Bloomberg News headlined its story, Secret Cameras Record Baltimore’s Every Move From Above, and now Baltimore’s Police Commissioner is trying to reassure the public and justify the program:
In his statement, Davis referenced police department statistics indicating that 84% of the city’s killings have occurred in outdoor public spaces. Citing that figure, Davis said “it seems logical to explore opportunities to capture the brazen killers who don’t think twice about gunning down their victims on our streets.”
Davis also said using closed-circuit CitiWatch surveillance cameras mounted in “small, concentrated” areas over the last few years had produced crime reductions of 33% on average in those parts of the city.
