Lawmakers seek to delay new rule allowing mass hacking by federal agents

A bipartisan coalition of privacy rights advocates in Congress introduced last-ditch legislation Thursday to delay a new rule from taking effect Dec. 1 to allow federal agents armed with a single search warrant to hack millions of Americans’ computers at once.

“A single prosecutor should not have the power to hack into the phone or computer of virtually anyone in the United States,” said Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “The sensible thing to do is delay the implementation of this rule and allow Congress to investigate further.”
