How to figure out if hackers leaked your password

Posted on May 25, 2018 by pogowasright.org

If you haven’t tried using HaveIBeenPwned.com to see if your email address has been part of any big breach, that should be your first step. Check that site to see whether your login credentials have been compromised in any hack known to the site’s owner, Troy Hunt.  If your login credentials have been part of a large data dump that Troy knows about, it will tell you what business or data dump your login was found in.  That’s your clue to change your password for that business or site, if you haven’t done so already.

But there’s another tool based on HaveIBeenPwned.com that you may want to know about.  Sean Keach reports on a Chrome extension called PassProtect:.

It’s a free Google Chrome extension developed by cybersecurity firm Okta.

First, you’ll need to download and install the extension for your Google Chrome web browser.

Note that it won’t work on other web browsers, like Apple’s Safari, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

Whenever you log into a website by typing in your password, you’ll be notified if your password is no longer safe.

Read more on NY Post. And keep in mind that not finding yourself on HaveBeenIPwned.com is not the end-all of checking your security, as that site only includes big breaches or dumps that Troy gets. There are many other hacks and dumps out there that your data may be in. So don’t breathe a sigh of relief too soon or rest on your laurels.  Stay vigilant.
