1TB of police body camera videos found lounging around public databases

Posted on July 2, 2019 by pogowasright.org

I usually report data leaks over on DataBreaches.net, but this one seems to dovetail nicely with this site’s coverage of surveillance issues.  Thomas Claburn reports that Jasun Tate, CEO of Black Alchemy Solutions Group, and his team had

identified about a terabyte of officer body cam videos, stored in unprotected internet-facing databases, belonging to the Miami Police Department, and cops in other US cities as well as places aboard. The operators of these databases – Tate suggests there are five service providers involved – work with various police departments. The footage apparently dates from 2018 to present.

Often, leaks are discovered by researchers but have not been already snagged by less honorable parties. In this case, because Tate became aware of the leak from posts on a dark web forum, it is more than likely that a number of non-researchers have downloaded some or all of the data.
