An estimated one million innocent peoples’ DNA profiles are still on the national database, despite a European ruling saying that it is a breach of privacy laws.
DNA profiles of innocent people are being removed from the national database at the rate of very slightly over one a day, despite a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that indefinite holding DNA profiles was disproportionate and a breach of privacy rights.
According to Home Office minister Alan Campbell, 377 profiles were removed in 2009 following appeals to police – a figure which Lib Dem policing spokesman Paul Holmes has branded ‘a disgrace’.
Mr Holmes says that chief constables are being discouraged from removing the genetic fingerprint of innocent people until new legislation is passed, and that wouldn’t happen before the general election.
