Customs and Border Protection Officer Charged with Computer Snooping

Posted on February 17, 2010 by pogowasright.org

Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced that an Information was filed charging Cleveland-based United States Customs and Border Protection Officer Scot Hafko, age 49, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, with one count of unauthorized access to a government computer, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1030(a)(2)(B) and (c)(2)(A).

The information alleges that while employed as a United States Customs and Border Protection Officer, Hafko abused his official access to the Treasury Enforcement Communications System (TECS) database to obtain personal information about others. United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach stated, “This case demonstrates that we consider invasions of individual privacy by federal officials betraying positions of public trust very serious matters that will result in criminal prosecutions.”

The court may determine the actual sentence under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which depend upon a number of factors unique to each case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, his role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. The actual sentence may be less than the statutory maximum.
