Britain’s next generation of speed cameras are secretly being trialled in the Westcountry.
The new spy cameras combine number plate reading technology with a global positioning satellite receiver, enabling them to measure average speeds over long distances.
Similar to the speed enforcement cameras used in roadworks, the next generation cameras are cheaper and can be installed virtually anywhere.
They are currently going through Home Office tests at only two sites in the country. One is on the A374 between Antony and Torpoint in South East Cornwall, the other is in London.
The development of the controversial cameras – which also take pictures of vehicles and drivers – have fuelled the debate on expanding state surveillance.
