Anne Wojcicki Wins Bidding for 23andMe

Anne Wojcicki, the co-founder and former CEO of 23andMe, is poised to regain control of the DNA-testing company after a nonprofit she controls topped a prior bid.

Hovering over the bankruptcy proceedings—and a sale—is what will happen to customers’ genetic data under new ownership.

Customer fears sparked a congressional hearing this week and a lawsuit from 28 state attorneys general seeking to block a sale.

Nearly 2 million 23andMe customers deleted their data from the company’s database following the bankruptcy filing, its current chief executive said during the hearing. That represented roughly 15% of the company’s total customers.
