AU: Banned drinkers details to be checked online

Posted on November 23, 2011July 2, 2025 by Dissent

Clare Rawlinson reports:

Licence-holders have expressed outrage at the Government’s plan to enforce the Banned Drinkers Register through online and interstate alcohol purchases.

A new online register – accessible to any genuine liquor retailer – will prevent those on the BDR from buying alcohol through online stores. But it has raised questions about privacy and identity theft.

“That’s a whole database for the ID theft people…unbelievable,” Megan Brown told 105.7 ABC Darwin.

Read more on ABC. Despite their assurances of database security and authentication to access the database, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the database exposed on Pastebin by those who hack to demonstrate that claims of security are highly overblown.
