AU: WA cops get Facebook warning about posting photos

Posted on November 27, 2010July 3, 2025 by Dissent

Nicole Cox reports:

WA Police have been banned from posting photos of themselves in police uniform, police-issue weapons and the force’s logo on social networking sites such as Facebook.

The sweeping security crackdown comes amid fears sensitive information could be leaked and investigations compromised by officers who upload personal information on popular internet sites including Facebook, Twitter and Myspace.

In a memo sent to the state’s 5700 officers on November 17, Assistant Commissioner for professional standards Dominic Staltari said web posts could compromise police investigations and the personal safety of officers, as well as put officers at risk of identity fraud.

Mr Staltari said officers and public servants needed to take extra precautious to prevent sensitive, work-related information from being revealed especially undercover operatives working on secret operations.
