Fingerprints in EU passports? Court hearing coming up March 13

Posted on March 5, 2013July 1, 2025 by Dissent

I’ve occasionally noted the progress of a challenge by a German lawyer, Michael Swarz, to the requirement of fingerprints in EU passports.  A reader alerts me that there is an upcoming hearing in the EU Court of Justice on March 13.

Submissions by the EU Parliament, EU Commission, EU Council, Germany and Poland all support the use of a biometric passport.

For the privacy-oriented background on the case, see these commentaries by EFF, EDRI, and EU Law Radar.
