At a prestigious private school in Baltimore County, Maryland, surveys asking young students about their gender identity and sexual experiences have led to significant parental backlash.
Parents at the elite St. Paul’s School in Greenspring, Maryland, are expressing frustration over recent school policies and surveys that delve into the gender identity and sexual experiences of students. The private school, located just north of Baltimore City and amidst steeplechase horse country, charges tuition ranging from $32,000 for lower school to $38,000 for upper school annually.
The controversy began in January when the school distributed an “identity inventory” to young boys. This questionnaire inquired whether the students identified as “Cisgender,” “Transgender,” “Gender Non-Conforming,” or “Agender.” The reaction from parents was swift and intense, with many expressing outrage on social media. The school reportedly suspended the children of at least one outspoken parent, though these students were later reinstated.
Despite the backlash, the school issued another survey, this time targeting young girls. The survey, titled the “Independent School Health Check,” was conducted by the Indiana University Center for Survey Research. Parents who have contacted us are concerned about the appropriateness of the questions asked, particularly in relation to young and vulnerable students.
