The Department of Homeland Security has again pushed back the deadline for when the federal government will stop accepting state ID cards that don’t meet the standards of the REAL ID Act of 2005
Announced Thursday morning, the new grace period extends the deadline for military bases and other federal institutions by 90 days to Jan. 9, 2017. The deadline for federal airport checkpoints remains Jan. 22, 2018.
The REAL ID Act formalized security rules recommended by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks, also known as the 9/11 Commission. The law is unpopular with privacy advocates, who argue the ID card requirements move the United States toward a centralized national ID card system.
