Posted on January 14, 2025 by Dissent

[Joint Press Release, January 12, 2025]

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC – the Republic of Korea) and the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA – California, the United States of America) signed a declaration of cooperation on January 10th 2025, emphasizing their shared commitment to safeguarding the privacy and personal information of their citizens and consumers, while recognizing the need for enhanced cross-border collaboration.

Dr. Haksoo Ko, Chairperson of the PIPC and Mr. Ashkan Soltani, Executive Director of the CPPA, have signed a declaration of cooperation that will allow both authorities:

  • to share best practices, knowledge and information on procedures and methods including in the course of their investigations
  • to share their annual enforcement plans and annual activity
  • to facilitate meetings with staff members and
  • to share relevant experiences and develop appropriate mechanisms for mutual collaboration

This declaration represents a significant step forward in strengthening collaboration between the PIPC and the CPPA, both of which play a key role in the global landscape of privacy and data protection. While the need for cross-border cooperation is increasing in the digital era, this partnership reflects shared commitment to privacy and data protection.

“This collaboration with the CPPA is in line with the PIPC’s ongoing efforts to diversify and expand its global cooperation. We hope this agreement enhances the benefits for citizens in both jurisdictions and serves as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation when it comes to addressing privacy issues.” — Dr. Haksoo Ko, Chairperson of the PIPC

“International cooperation is essential in addressing the privacy challenges of our interconnected world. By exchanging best practices and strengthening our collective efforts, we can learn from one another and enhance our impact in safeguarding privacy on a global scale.” —Mr. Ashkan Soltani, Executive Director of the CPPA
