The ICO has fined Telegraph Media Group £30,000 after it sent hundreds of thousands of emails on the day of the general election urging readers to vote Conservative.
TMG fell afoul of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) on May 7, 2015 when the team sending out its daily briefing to the “editorial content” mail list were told, at the last minute, to attach a letter to the newsletter. That letter encouraged people to vote Conservative. Because of the nature of that content, the TMG should not have sent the mailing to those who had opted out of commercial and marketing communications. Hundreds of thousands of people received the communication who should not have received it.
