Schools Take Issue With State’s Collection of Students’ Social Security Numbers

Posted on September 4, 2010 by pogowasright.org

In recent coverage, I’ve mentioned that some school districts in Maine are urging parents to just say “No” to providing their child’s Social Security Number when asked to do so by the school district. The request is part of a new state law that would presumably enable Maine to track students through school and then post-graduation to see if enter the workforce or go to college, etc. The Maine Civil Liberties Union had come out against the law.

A news story by Josie Huang for the Maine Public Broadcasting Network reports that nearly a dozen school districts have now taken a stand against the new law.
