Schumer to Introduce Bill To Deter Misuse of Full-Body Scan Images

Posted on December 5, 2010 by pogowasright.org

Associated Press reports:

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is seeking to make it illegal for anyone to distribute or record the revealing images produced by full-body scanners at airports.

The Democrat planned to announce such a bill Sunday. Penalties could include up to a year in prison and fines up to $100,000, or both.

“Anyone who would try to use these images for purposes other than security should be severely punished,” Schumer told The Associated Press.

Okay, but any such bill doesn’t actually prevent misuse — it only punishes it after-the-fact in an attempt to deter it.  And the bill doesn’t deal with the over-the-top gropings that I believe are a Fourth Amendment violation when they are done without reasonable suspicion or probable cause.   When people do not set off metal detectors or AIT scanners, on what basis do you justify such intrusive patdowns?
