Privacy Advocates Annoyed by Media Distorting Their Privacy Advocacy

Posted on January 11, 2011 by pogowasright.org

Kashmir Hill points out that mainstream media is not clearly portraying the views of privacy advocates they quote in their coverage:

…. Ah, the New York Times strikes again, and it’s not even the Style section. As a journalist, I know you need people to represent certain narrative voices in a story, but it’s unfair to take a quote from someone that mischaracterizes their general view on a subject.

Read her blog on Forbes.

It’s concerning that mainstream media relies on so many unnamed sources when the ones they do name may find that their names may be associated with a point of view they do not hold. If mainstream media can’t create an accurate impression of what named sources think, can we trust what they’re attributing to unnamed sources without more information or context?
