In testimony before the House Committee on Homeland Security, EPIC President Marc Rotenberg urged Congress to halt the plan to deploy body scanners in the nation’s airports. “Based on the documents we’ve obtained, the views of experts, the concerns of American, and the extraordinary cost, Congress should suspend the program,” said Mr. Rotenberg. In a recent letter to President Obama, EPIC and Ralph Nader recommended an independent review to assess health impacts, privacy safeguards, and the actual effectiveness of the devices. Through FOIA litigation, EPIC has obtained technical specifications, vendor contracts, and hundreds of complaints from US air travelers about the body scanners. A recent report from the GAO has also raised questions about the effectiveness and cost of the devices.
