Ohio Judge Saffold Removed From Murder Case

Impact of the Plain Dealer suggesting that a judge is an anonymous commenter on their site and that she commented on cases that were before her:

When the case becomes about the judge rather than the facts of the case and the law, its time for the judge to step aside.

Saying that it’s important to avoid even the appearance of bias and impropriety, Ohio Supreme Court acting chief justice Paul Pfiefer removed Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold Thursday from the capital case of Anthony Sowell.

“The record before me does not support a finding of actual bias or prejudice on Judge Saffold’s part”, Pfeifer wrote. “Nevertheless, her removal is necessary to avoid even an appearance of bias, prejudice or impropriety, and to ensure the parties, their counsel and the public the unquestioned neutrality of an impartial judge”.
