From EPIC.org:
EPIC has sent the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Security Agency for information about a proposal to expand Internet surveillance and deploy weakened security standards. The proposal would require Internet companies to develop network services to enable government access to private communications, including those on peer-to-peer networks. In 1996, the National Resource Council concludedthat such technical standards make network communications more vulnerable to cyber attack. For more information, see EPIC: Cryptography Policy.
