In Health Care, Too Much Privacy Is a Bad Thing

Posted on May 22, 2019 by pogowasright.org

… says a data scientist, Luke Miner. He seems to want us all to feel guilty if we don’t share our health data more, because think of all the progress in healthcare that COULD be made, if only….

So Miner’s solution seems to be to relax the federal prohibitions and requirements for sharing.

Sorry, Luke. I agree the problem of incompatibility of records systems needs to be addressed and remedied. But I do not agree that people should have their health data used without their informed consent.  We are already seeing the problems that can occur when relatives’ DNA, provided voluntarily, is used to identify and eventually convict someone who has NOT provided their DNA voluntarily nor agreed to anyone else sharing their shared DNA.
