MI: Settlement raises issues of abused inmates’ privacy, victims’ rights

Kathleen Gray reports:

A Washtenaw County judge says he wants to protect the privacy of at least 800 female inmates who won a $100-million class action because they were sexually assaulted or abused in prison.

But, Circuit Judge Timothy Connors said at a hearing Thursday, he also is determined to make sure the women pay their debts to their children and their victims.

“I would like all of you to figure this out and give me some proposals,” he said. “It seems we ought to be able to collect child support and restitution.”
