Surveillance Society: Pennsylvania lags in privacy protection measures

If your boss calls you into the corner office and demands your Facebook password, you can refuse with impunity in 23 states — though not in Pennsylvania.

A state with individualistic roots running from the Declaration of Independence to the Whiskey Rebellion isn’t among the nearly two dozen that bar employers from insisting on access to your personal social media account. Similarly, Pennsylvania has no law governing the information stored in new cars’ event data recorders (“black boxes”), no restriction on the flow of student data through education technology websites, and no rules for many other existing or potential surveillance tools now regulated in other states.
