Samaya Dharmaraj reports:
In an era where digital transformation shapes every aspect of governance, business, and daily life, safeguarding citizens’ personal data has become a top priority for India. Recognising the critical need for a secure andaccountable digital ecosystem, the government has taken significant steps to establish a robust framework for data protection and cyber resilience.
At the heart of these efforts lies the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), complemented by proactive measures to address data breaches, enforce accountability, and create widespread awareness about responsible digital practices.
The DPDP Act, signed into law by the President of India, balances individuals’ privacy rights with the necessity of processing personal data for lawful purposes. To ensure effective implementation, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the Draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, inviting public feedback by 18 February 2025 via the MyGov portal. These rules clarify the Act’s practical aspects and establish a framework for accountability, transparency, and enforcement.
